Tips for Minimal Packing for Your Next Adventure
I’ve done my fair share of traveling and with each trip I get wiser. I’m always moving around trying to find new vendors or inspiration for Blooh. Most of my packing happens frantically but these tips have made the process stress-free and significantly cut down the time spent packing. I never travel with more than a carry on bag even for long trips of 1 month or more. The motto is always minimal and simple and it's no different with packing; here are 10 quick ways to up-level your carry-on for your next adventure 🧳:
-
🎨 Create a color-coordinated travel capsule: add versatile clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched for almost any occasion. This will help you make the most out of a limited wardrobe. Additionally, plan ahead exactly what you’ll need keeping in account things like weather or activities. Take it up a notch by picking a color palette that blends well with basics. When in doubt, black essentials are my go-to.
-
🧺 Solve the Laundry Problem: Throw in a few laundry strips (here’s a plastic free alternative) that can be used with a washer or without. There’s no telling how accessible a laundry unit will be near you so this hardly takes up any space and can be highly useful.
-
👟 The Shoe Rule and Renting: I’ve always used the rule of three when it comes to shoes by packing 1 active, 1 casual, and 1 fancier option (define fancy however you choose). If I really need extra pairs I’ll rent it locally for that occasion - completely removes the hassle of taking up large suitcase space.
-
👑 Add in a Hint of Luxury: this is something I’ve recently started doing and it's so special. Travel often helps us relax and gain a broader perspective on the world no matter what the motive. So to stay true to the spirit of travel, add a luxury fabric like silk to your suitcase. For example, a silk eye mask that’s gentle on your skin is also a small comfort treat for yourself. Try it, you’ll notice the difference.
-
📣 📚 🌂 Skip the Just in Case Items: if you tend to create a running list of “what if” scenarios that never seem to end, take a deep breath. If you can buy it affordably within a 2-3 mile radius of where you’re staying, you probably don’t need to pack it. Essentials like emergency medicine or favorite toiletries especially can be poured into smaller travel containers. Once you get in the habit of skipping the rest it’ll become easier. It’ll also get you out the door and exploring more.
-
👛 Downsize your Bulky Cosmetic Bag with a Smaller Pouch: this one is tough. But, I’ve found that my regular sized cosmetic pouch has so many things that I rarely touch on a trip that it's no use lugging it around. Choose a smaller pouch that properly fills up all the way to make room for everything else. When in doubt refer to #5.
-
👗 🥖 Roll Your Clothes: Rolling your clothes instead of folding them can save space in your suitcase and prevent wrinkles. This technique is especially useful for lightweight fabrics like t-shirts and skirts.
-
🎒 Pack a (Waterproof) Day Bag: Bring a small backpack or tote bag for day trips and excursions. This will allow you to carry essentials like a water bottle, sunscreen, and snacks, without having to lug around a heavy purse. Even better if the bag is waterproof. I never take this bag out of my suitcase anymore. It’s right there ready to go with me on the next trip.
-
🟪 Use Packing Cubes or Compression Bags: Packing cubes are a great way to stay organized and make the most of your suitcase space. Use them to separate clothing items and accessories, making it easier to find what you need and to pack and unpack. Generally grouping similar items into pouches and bags will make it so much easier to find them later.
- 💧Pack a Foldable Water Bottle: if you’re like me and need to just feel a water bottle by your side for safety (you know who you are), then this might be for you. Experiment with a compressible, reusable water bottle to save precious space in your personal bag or suitcase. You’ll thank me later.
💡 Pro tip: pack biggest to smallest in order. Once all the biggest pieces have their place, start filling in the cracks with smaller items. If you pack randomly, you’ll notice how smoothly packing goes with this.
